The Fit India Movement was launched by the Hon'ble Prime Minister on 29 August 2019 with the vision of ‘Hum Fit Toh India Fit’ and the message ‘Fitness ki Dose, Aadha Ghanta Roz’, to make fitness an integral part of everyday life. Over the years, the Movement has expanded its public outreach through flagship campaigns such as National Sports Day, Fit India Carnival, and Sundays on Cycle.

The Fit India School Certification Program is an initiative under the Fit India Movement, launched with the objective of making physical fitness an essential and everyday part of school life rather than an occasional or event-based activity. The program derives its statutory basis from the Gazette Notification and Operational Guidelines of the revised Khelo India Scheme (KIS), which formally provides for a school-level fitness certification mechanism.

This concept note presents the proposed new design of the Fit India School Certification Programme and invites inputs and suggestions from schools, teachers, parents, education administrators, sports bodies, and other stakeholders. The Programme seeks to build a strong, continuing relationship between Fit India and schools by promoting fitness among students, teachers, and staff. It recognises schools that provide regular physical activity and sports opportunities and gives parents a transparent, reliable reference for making informed school choices.

The underlying policy premise is that the school is the first formal institution after home where fitness habits can be systematically taught, practiced, and reinforced in a child's life.

Make 30 minutes of physical activity a regular daily habit. Choose activities that are enjoyable, such as running, cycling, yoga, dancing, or traditional Indian games. Increase the intensity gradually rather than exercising too hard initially. Drink sufficient water before and after exercise. Maintain a balanced diet and adequate sleep. Avoid excessive screen time and include outdoor activities in the daily routine. Perform exercises with proper technique and under appropriate supervision, especially for younger students. Keep one or two lighter/recovery days each week depending on your fitness level. Record progress regularly through simple fitness goals such as running time, repetitions, flexibility, or balance. My fitness goal: “30 minutes a day, every day—to stay active, healthy, disciplined, and fit.”

The proposed Fit India School Certification Programme is a welcome initiative to institutionalise physical fitness and sports as an integral part of school education. The framework should ensure that certification is based not merely on infrastructure or facilities, but on the regularity, quality, inclusiveness, and measurable impact of physical activity programmes. Clear and practical criteria should be provided for schools of different sizes and resource levels, including rural and government schools. The assessment process should be transparent, objective, and supported by periodic verification. Greater emphasis may also be placed on student participation, teacher engagement, accessibility for children with disabilities, and age-appropriate fitness activities. Capacity-building and guidance for teachers would further strengthen implementation. Overall, the programme has strong potential to create sustainable fitness habits among students and contribute meaningfully to the vision.
