A smart city, we presume, is one that has a clean environment. Coimbatore has been called a second Ooty despite being an industrial hub. But it has also always suffered from water shortage. With the support of the citizens, there has been a great effort to revive the ponds and lakes. But this has to be done in a sustained manner.

A Smart City should be Mobile, Safe, Clean and Green. But just look at the condition of roads here! Garbage dumps and drains are overflowing and, of course, water logging remains one of the major problems. These should be tackled first on a priority basis and then things will automatically fit in for smart city.

More sidewalks and ramps have to be built. Public spaces should be wheelchair-friendly. There is just one in the Railway station but it is a long ride to reach the ramp, which is at the rear end.

Retaining the character of the city is what I call a smart thing to do. Coimbatore is beautiful. It has lakes, is surrounded by hills…Sadly, of the 32 tanks, only 11 or so remain. For me, protecting, nurturing and caring for the natural heritage is as important as preserving brick and mortar structures. Old institutions when they go for additional buildings seem to opt for contemporary structures.

Foreplanned transport infra like a metro rail keeping in mind the speed at which the city is growing. Need for more public toilets, waste collection services. Finally digitization & Web presence of all govt functions. I need to be able to see the bus schedules for the day and request for govt services from my phone itself.

# Expansion of airport to accommodate more international flight. For this we need to expedite land acquisition.
# All cables Electrical, phone cables, cable TV, internet etc. to be made underground with a dedicated duct bank easily maintainable.
# RTO offices to be converted similar to Passport Seva project where more process are streamlined.
# Improve/Educate existing driver’s knowledge of road rules using digital games, road show, incentives.
