The Fit India Movement was launched by the Hon'ble Prime Minister on 29 August 2019 with the vision of ‘Hum Fit Toh India Fit’ and the message ‘Fitness ki Dose, Aadha Ghanta Roz’, to make fitness an integral part of everyday life. Over the years, the Movement has expanded its public outreach through flagship campaigns such as National Sports Day, Fit India Carnival, and Sundays on Cycle.

The Fit India School Certification Program is an initiative under the Fit India Movement, launched with the objective of making physical fitness an essential and everyday part of school life rather than an occasional or event-based activity. The program derives its statutory basis from the Gazette Notification and Operational Guidelines of the revised Khelo India Scheme (KIS), which formally provides for a school-level fitness certification mechanism.

This concept note presents the proposed new design of the Fit India School Certification Programme and invites inputs and suggestions from schools, teachers, parents, education administrators, sports bodies, and other stakeholders. The Programme seeks to build a strong, continuing relationship between Fit India and schools by promoting fitness among students, teachers, and staff. It recognises schools that provide regular physical activity and sports opportunities and gives parents a transparent, reliable reference for making informed school choices.

The underlying policy premise is that the school is the first formal institution after home where fitness habits can be systematically taught, practiced, and reinforced in a child's life.

Subject: Inputs on Fit India School/Higher Education Certification – Engineering Student PerspectiveKey Suggestions: Mandatory Stress-Relief Slots: Request that the certification criteria strictly mandate daily or alternate-day non-academic slots for sports, yoga, or basic exercise to counter heavy academic stress. Credits for Wellness: Propose incorporating "Fitness and Wellness" as a non-academic credit or audit course in the B.Tech curriculum to ensure colleges take it seriously.Campus Infrastructure Access: Suggest that colleges certifying under Fit India must keep sports facilities, gymnasiums, or open grounds accessible to students beyond standard library/lab hours. Mental-Physical Health Link: Highlight that engineering students face high burnout, and the policy should explicitly link physical movement with mental health and stress relief.

Respected Prime Minister, I write to suggest practical steps for reviving Sanskrit, inspired by historical insights in Jawaharlal Nehru’s The Discovery of India. Sanskrit is mistakenly viewed as a dormant language, yet history proves its global influence. Thailand adapted its technical and administrative terms from Sanskrit, while 7th-century Cambodian inscriptions record vibrant Sanskrit recitations. Within India, shared roots make simple spoken Sanskrit easily accessible to speakers of modern regional languages. To revitalize this heritage, I humbly suggest launching an affordable monthly Sanskrit periodical featuring simple essays, news, and classical excerpts for students and general readers. Reviving Sanskrit will strengthen our civilizational identity and reconnect our youth with a shared Asian legacy. Yours sincerely, M V Apparao
