Salem, the fifth largest city in Tamil Nadu is also known as ‘Steel City’. Salem city has been selected as one of the smart cities under the ministry of Urban development, Government of India’s Smart Cities mission.Salem is now required to formulate its own unique vision, mission and plan under the Smart cities Challenge. This has to be done in consultation with the city residents and stakeholders. Salem city Municipal Corporation requests all its citizens of Salem city to share their views, opinions and area improvement suggestions to make the city Salem as a smart city. Your valuable views and suggestions are important to transform the city as a smart city to improve the quality of life for each one of their citizens in Salem City.

52) Most of the government operations should be digitalized, so that it will easy for the citizen to do everything online 53) Placing of dustbins (seperate for Wet and dry waste) across the city 54) Bazaar street is too constructed. This needs to be re located/ regulated 55) Many street walls are pasted with Posters/Banners. This needs to be regularized

46) Satellite town needs to be created near to the present city limits 47) Wifi zones needs to be created across many places in the city 48) Digital library need to be opened 49) Electric buses need to be introduced inside city limits 50) City bus stops need to be improved with many facilities such as roof, seatings,digital display of bus timings 51) All the buses should be fitted with GPS and appropriate bus arrival timings based on GPS should get displayed in all the bus stops inside city

40) Needs more and more bio-toilets inside the city limits 41) Make sure that all the new buildings/commercial complex constructed should have proper parking facilities 42) All new buildings should be constucted as Green buildings 43) River Thirumanimuttharu is been spoiled by linking all the city drainage into it. Steps needs to be taken to overcome this 44) Mookaneri lake can be developed as a tourist spot 45) City roads are in bad shape. It needs a major changeover

34) IT Park needs to be setup and Airport needs to be re opened as its a main obstacle as of now for IT companies to open in Salem 35) Construction of Flyovers, Subways,ROB's wherever its possible 36) Improvising the public transport in the city 37) Establishing the market for Coir-rope manufacturers in the city 38) It can be made as a Logistics hub of south india due to its location 39) Needs to expand the city limits in all the directions as the city has grown a lot in all the directions

26) Implementing Solar system wherever is possible like Street Lights, traffic signals 27) All households should be advised to use energy efficiency power products such as LED's 28) All the Lakes in the city needs to be developed 29) Panaimarathupatti lake can be developed into a tourist spot 30) Introduction of Cable car in Yercaud 31) Develop the tourism 32) All the slums inside the city needs Rehabilitation 33) Establishing the market for the Silver manufactures in the city

18) All the power cables should be under grounded 19) More trains needs to be originated from Salem 20) Implement a MEMU shed at Salem Railway station 21) Parking is a mess in the city, this needs to be regulated using MLCP's 22) Reduce of Plastic or non- bio degradable inside the city limits 23) Prepaid Auto system should be implemented 24) Share Autos should be regulated 25) Online services needs to be introduced for all the Public services

10) New trade centre for city to hold trade related exhibitions and meetings 11) Most of the roads are encroached by vendors or nearby shops. Regulate them 12) Construct the Pavements on either side of the road 13) Roads to be re laid into most part of the city 14) 24x7 Water supply should be there 15) Widen the roads wherever is possible with proper center medians 16) Uninterrupted Power supply should be there 17) UGD system should be implemented all over the city

6) New city bus routes needs to be introduced as its still follows the age old routes 7) City central bus terminus needs to be relocated and construct a new Integrated bus stand in the outskirts of city. Salem CBS is one of the busiest bus stand in Tamilnadu due its location. Current bus stand can't handle the crowd and buses during weekends/holidays. 8) Creating new Parks and entertainment related activities 9) Upgrade the ZOO by adding more Animals and play area for Kids

Here are my Suggestions for #Salem: 1) Reopen the Salem Airport and it can be made as the major Cargo handling Airport for South India due to its location Advantage 2) 2500+ Acres of lands are wasted inside Steel plant. This can be utilized by allowing Steel related MSME's to start operations inside the steel plant 3) Improvement in Solid wasted management 4) City badly needs an Outer ring road as the present Bye-pass is actually looks like a city road 5) Increasing the green belts in city

Necessities that require immediate attention and effective field work for Salem to be Smart include, Utilization of Salem Airport for both passenger and Cargo purposes. Enhanced public transport facilities inside core city limits since the roads are narrow without much space for expansion. Using public transport in these places should manage traffic woes. Environment friendly steps to be taken to replenish Tirumanimutharu.
