Several studies have shown that school children do not seem to acquire age appropriate skills in reading, writing and numeracy. There is a need to explore the various approaches to improve teaching–learning at the elementary stage. The objective of this theme is to understand the issues of low learning achievement levels in elementary schooling, assess the system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation and suggest ways and methods of improving the learning outcomes of school children which would result in enhancing the quality of elementary education.

Elementary education is where the base (hindi - Neev) is built. The system at present relies completely on the imparting of learning by rote (mugging - hindi, ratna). This system MUST be changed. At Elementary level its imperative to hone the SENSES of the child, ie, sharpen his/her skills in OBSERVATION. All SCIENCES are based upon the OBSERVATION & QUESTIONING of NATURE & the ENVIRONMENT around. The natural INQUISITIVENESS of the child needs to be WELCOMED & not STIFLED by rote learning.

We want playway method in elementary education. We must think, how to minimise the weight of books in elemetary education. Now elementary education became a big corporate business without taxes. Government should put control on fees structure. Education system must give moral values from elementary stage by Ramayana and Mahabharata.
