These refuge bags can be taken to local sorting centres and sorted for recycling. needs technology, mechanisation, infrastructure. Same can be done for office complexes and malls. Please note waste management is a profitable business too. We are importing a lot of recycled waste (as raw material) into country. We can source it locally & create jobs & keep our cities clean. it can be done as pilot projects for each city. We develop big malls & retailer chains, we can do this too.

Sameer, Manoj and all, My suggestion is to create policy document for pilot recycling waste management centres in all cities, with high population density. I believe it should be given to private entrepreneurs, with a guidelines on environmental controls & employment requirements. It may not be possible to go to color coded bins etc from now. but mixed garbage canbe collected by proper planning. They can setup bins at societies, housing complexes. Infact give refuge bags to households. Continue

We need to build the infrastructure to make sure that cleanliness is considered a business opportunity. Are our business community investing in this industry. Do we have companies like VEOLOA in India which have recycling and wage management as their core business. Need to attract these companies with their known how. Also, I feel that council area, region or state should charge this through local tax system. Or, chargeable based on water consumed by the household.

The big issue in india is around people coming from villages to cities. They do not have the housing or toilets to live properly. These people are living in small houses and controlled by landlords in big cities. They have no association with the place that they live-in. They are poor and busy with their daily life. And, need not worry about as to what happens around them. Key is affordable housing with appropriate amenities. It is important that govt part funds housing to allow for people

Develop a small scale industry where people are offered to run toilets and keep them clean - put a charge for usage (1 rupees for usage) Every activity has economic value - this should not be government funded activity. This will give employment and there is an incentive to keep the environment clean for person or organisation running the toilets.

First is the recognition that we need to keep our surroundings clean - Already started, we need to keep-up the momentum. Create recycling centres - ask people to come and submit their recycle material Separate collection system - paper, food perishables and land fill material at source Give recycle coupons which can be used in the big superstores Use social media to publish pictures in any area where there is poor sanitation/cleanliness

Hand washing is the most basic skill in all walks of life. For the healthcare setting the WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care should be nationally and locally adapted. See also WHO publication Save lives: clean your hands. Outside healthcare hand hygiene is relevant at work, home and public places to prevent spread of infections. Hand hygiene in food handlers is a major concern in India which need corrected. Hand hygiene campaign should be coupled with the sanitation for all mission.

Hi All, Check this scenario. Liquid packaging cartons was going to dump sites previously. And its not biodegradable as fibre is sandwiched betwn PE & Al foils. Now with pyrolysis techniques its separated to paraffin, aluminium & other usable compounds. Its paper fibre recycled too. This recycled aluminium is pure, same properties & 50% cheaper to produce than mining & processing. All it needs is ideas, initiative & investments. We may not see every benefit today, our future generations will.
