During the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ Radio programme, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi shared that a large number of people have been talking to him about the increase in usage of drugs. The Prime Minister described this as a very serious issue and assured that he will talk about the menace during the next ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme.

The Open Forums invites you to talk about the menace of drugs. Share how you feel this menace can be mitigated, what steps can be taken to get youngsters out of this. You can share anecdotes – how you saved children from this menace of drugs or if you have had a personal experience. NGOs working in this sphere should contribute. Your contribution would be a major step in freeing India from the menace of drugs.

Respected Prime Minister, We would like to give some ideas to combat drug addiction.Looking at the concerns and health of young people & the growing addictions among youth, de-addiction services need to be expanded in number & capacity. There needs to have a basic orientation cum training manual for all medical officers & other professionals, so that the de-addiction can be strengthened at all levels of health care extending to PHC's, Community Health Centre, Voluntary Health Association of India

While India has a large alcohol abstinent population, among those who drink most drink at hazardous levels. Alcohol use has been associated with over 60 types of disease and injury, work place absenteeism and reduced productivity. It was estimated that India spent about 244 billion each year to manage costs of alcohol use which was more than the excise earned from sale of alcohol. The trauma faced by family members is beyond estimation. Alcoholism disrupts family routines, increases conflicts and domestic violence causing physical and emotional distress especially among the women and children. The cognitive, emotional and social development of children in such families is affected and more likely to use alcohol in their adult years. The impact on the socially marginalized sections can be devastating. Reduction in earning capacity, increased health care costs result in indebtedness and poverty. Alcohol related harm in India can be significantly reduced with policy changes which have far reaching impact with little investment of resources. • Development and implementation of an alcohol policy to guide response • Easy availability and lower price increases alcohol use. In lieu of prohibition, State Governments can effectively respond by: - Increasing price of alcohol in keeping with the inflation level - Reduce number of outlets and hours and days of alcohol sale - Earmark a percentage of alcohol sale revenue to fund prevention activities and provide services at the primary health care level to help people alter alcohol use. - Address drinking and driving by increasing awareness, introducing random breath analyzer testing and a system of fines/ suspension or revoking of driving license in case of an offence. • Ensuring quality, professionally managed, licensed addiction treatment services by strengthening the current Central Government funded scheme. • Changing attitudes and alcohol use patterns demands a long term strategy guided by research based evidence with a public health perspective. This becomes possible only with committed leadership at the highest level.

They are readily available at cheaper price in other forms at medical stores and stationary stores (Whitener). Ban whitener and make sure the addictive drugs should not be given without prescription.

Thank you our honourable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi for this big step. This is the exact meaning of “LOKTANTRA” where every Indian can give suggestion for a better India or for a better future. As I think we have to look from the root of this problem “Drugs”. This is a true fact that drugs is helpful for our life but in a limit. Over limit usage is known as addiction and we need to stop this addiction not the complete drug usage.

From my point of view we can take following steps to stop illegal uses of drugs in our country: 1. First of all custom department should be more attentive about their work. Security level must be stringent by custom at airports and harbours of not only in international border but also in every state. Their power and rights should be increased.

2. We must stop the smuggling at “common man” level. I mean to say that if GOI announces rewards either in terms of cash or in terms of the wish (in a proper respect) the informer wants, every person will become more attentive. The target for smuggling should also be “ZERO TOLERANCE”. Also don’t ask the identity of any informer for his/her security because in present state of India very few people believe that police is honest (except Kerala).
