Swamiji was a visionary and a original thinker. He pointed out in his first public lecture in Asia on 15 January 1897: ‘But education has yet to be in the world, and civilization-civilization has begun no where yet’. Civilization is not freedom of speech, to speak without considering whether it hurts others. Civilization is not moving in the street with exposing sensitive body parts by ladies or girls as their right to choose own dresses.

We all believe that delivering a talk is teaching, which is wrong. A principal of a school or college who seeks bribe regularly for some favors, delivers talks on values in classes daily. He is a teacher and students listen to him but his discourse is not teaching in real sense of the term. It is a talk where neither the teacher nor the taught are involved internally. To be involved in teaching internally the teacher must have the willpower to conduct the learning process with strong character.

Why such value deficiencies are there when most in our society are god fearing? Here the self proclaimed Godmen or prechers are not working as teacher or imparters and the devotees are not behaving like students/taught/or receivers of knowledge. Whether today’s value degeneration is due to failure of the teachers or the taught or both? The only beneficiaries are the TV channels who get huge amount as advertisement for propagating blind belief among the masses shamelessly.

I am dead sure that values can’t be taught or imparted in classes on by reading books. If values can be generated in speeches then why there is value deficiencies in our country where everyday the so called self proclaimed godmen are giving value discources in multiple TV channels and pandals in various places and the so called devotees are purchasing advance tickets by paying thousands of rupees to attend such discourses and receive kirpa?

Human values spring from spirituality and religions. Religions play a major role in value education. Religions is not the only source but they are a major source on value inculcation. But can religion bring in values in life?

Over the last two decades I have vehemently pleaded the need for extra emphasis on value education, its inculcation, nurturance, and development. I met many parents, teachers and policy makers including former CJI and Chairman of NHRC of India justice late Ranganath Mishra in his cuttack residence twice to convince him to take up the issue with education planners.

Can man-making elements remain with anybody after education when greed is uppermost in mind? The same doctors are working in government hospitals, doing practice in nursing homes and sitting in own OPD/clinics for three to four hours daily and they receive besides salary not less than 20000/- per day not shown as taxable income. Can we call their education man-killing education?

If this is the case with a doctor who got free medical education, what the doctors who study MBBS by making payment 25 lakhs as donation will do? Can man-making elements remain with anybody after education when greed is uppermost in mind? The same doctors are working in government hospitals, doing practice in nursing homes and sitting in own OPD/clinics for three to four hours daily and they receive besides salary not less than 20000/- per day not shown as taxable income.

After spending 20000/- in the second visit, he is given clean chit as having no ailments. There are cases where actual requirement for treatment is very less but huge amount is extracted from poor villagers who come through agents with the hope of getting good treatment. The family even sold their precious land for treatment of fake diseases. This has become the character of our system.

Even the agents send not so ill persons saying them that they are developing serious diseases and needs to go to this or that doctor. As soon as he reaches the city hospital, he is drained by way of huge tests from A to Z and minimum 10 thousands is required for pathological tests and xray. The physians then say that you are developing such serious ailments and need further detection after 10 days. He is advised to come prepared with another 20000/-, which he gets by pledging his wife’s ornament
