Dear Citizens and Stakeholders of New Town Kolkata,

This is to inform you all that your city New Town Kolkata is one of the 23 cities selected all over India which have been put on a fast track mode to become a Smart City.

As per the directions received from the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, we have to submit an upgraded Smart City Proposal, taking into consideration the inputs received from the citizens and stakeholders within the broad framework of observations made available by the team of experts who have evaluated the plan.

You are therefore invited to go through our Smart City Plan in detail along with the observations of the expert panel, the links of which have been provided underneath and submit your inputs here within 18/03/2016.

You can also send your suggestions online to the email id smartcity@nkda.in or submit written copies at the Smart City Help Desk at the office of New Town Kolkata Development Authority, No 3, MAR, New Town, Kolkata – 156.

Smart City Green City - Cities with green cover, water bodies a must. Good and comprehensive zoning laws to prevent indiscriminate high rise structures keeping in mind resources required - water, sewage lines, high speed transportation and telecommunication facilities. Community centers for sports and leisure. Transparent local government with open channels for public interaction. Local produce markets. Schools linked with a community innovation and entrepreneurship program. Health Portal

Several great suggestions. Besides, I think ppls participation is the most important aspect. You may built something great up, but who will maintain it. Community cleaning drive and road ethics and littering ethics is important. If a community decides they wont litter or they would split up garden waste from recyclable, it would make a cleaner city. To start with fine imposition for litter could be a way. here "get well soon" kind of treatment with the offender can be another line of vigilance.

Try to focus on basic problems which lead to other problems like - cleanliness, congestion, traffic, Govt. services. Do not try to solve the problems with a complex solution and follow the KISS(Keep It Simple). Cleanliness - install garbage bins, impose fine, sensitize people. Congestion - for new developments, make wide roads first then build city around it. Focus on green parks, play areas, breathing spaces at intervals. Even websites - keep them simple and functional instead of jazzy.

A smart city should also have a clean looks yet informative. Unlike the rest of the city, New Town should have particular selective place for fixing posters instead of pinting walls and hanging posters here and there. Let it be any government related or any ad related. On top of that, these poster should have a particular date of removal so that instead of letting it hung in as ridiculously awkward manner ( torn or hanging around).

Any smart city must continiously uodate information about its residents. One body/Mechanism must be there which continiously tracking details of new immigrants inflow , health standards , purchase pattern, demographic pattern. Such details help authority to allocate resouces accodingly in proactive manner.

Please provide 24 hours drinking water, electricity, Gas supply to all the citizen of country in order to make smart city. Make roads and highway better and stress free. look the example of western world.

Gone through the proposal and the observations made by MoUD. Also went through the proposals of other winning cities. It appears that those at Delhi, must come down and see what NEwTown is. Other proposals are data rich which this SCP seems to be lagging in. But as far as innovative ideas are concerned, Kolkata leads. Best of Luck !

Smart transport, clean electric transport using elctric buses with fast charging usinh cheaper batteries, rain water harvesing in societies, net metering for solar installations, public toilets,fixed cemented dustbins(organic and non organic separate) at regular intervals, green cover, electric rikshaws for shorter commutes, water purifiers at public places,smart meters with differential pricing for electricty at different times of day, cctv cameras and smart policing, garbage segregation
