I have been in teaching MBA program for last 12 years. and also have held HOD post for a considerable period of time. The students which join MBA program in second level B schools have such poor communication skills, hygiene, behavioral patterns that it is difficult to mold them in 2 years. the first year goes in molding..in the 2nd year when start teaching management properly, course is over. imagine we do the work that should have been taken care of at school level.

this is a thorny topic which has been debated upon a number of times in a online group of which i am a member. we worry about rankings. improve quality of PRIMARY education. If the raw material is horrible for higher education, we are not fairy godmothers from Cinderella story book that we convert them to prince and princesses for a night. I heard we should use our mother tongue for teaching in place of english. AGREED. but the candidate should be good in mother tongue :(

Global Ranking can be achieved not by treating Ranking as a Goal, but rather improving quality of institutions of higher education.Existing accreditation system should be more stringent, transparent and free from all kinds of corrupt practices. Accreditation must be linked with all kinds of financial assistance and statutory approvals, recognitions. Annually, a national comprehensive report depicting accreditation status and their strengths and weaknesses should be prepared and disseminated.

Higher education should encourage Research & Development. University appointments to be on merit and not under any political or social clout.

Primary School Education Policy needs overhaul: -Semester system be introduced, - students getting less than 60-70% be given special classes, re-exam given till they reach the desired proficiency. - base has to be strong for a vibrant India. - teachers need to check home work thoroughly after school hours and brief the students on the following day, - system of punishment to be to repeat or re-write, - counsel parents of absentee students, - NGOs/retired to do random check

"sound mind in sound body". So while ranking the institutions, the health condition of its students also should be added as a criteria. This will help the institutes to concentrate on the health of its students.

The education system in our country has asked us to get a job in a good company. This kind of mindset for the students has to be changed. In order to take those measures, there must be a subject related to entrepreneur skills. Also the permissions to the schools must be given only when there is an ample place for the ground. And for the UG students there must be a proper info on the different streams available after their 12th other than engineering and medicine.

There are many parameters to rank universities. India Today does something every year. In America, USA Today and some others do the ranking. It is easy to adapt some criteria to get it done. But the main issue is, how do we improve the quality- simple- get rid of chamchagiri for positions and put people of merit in these schools.

For too long, appointment of faculty and deans and chancellors have been influenced so deeply by political power that many institutions have bitten the dust in the area of quality. Some years back, I visited the Ancient Indian History department at BHU- a great institution with a hoary past, now collecting dust with the professor correcting the spelling and grammar of his MA student's thesis- the content was pathetically organized lacking critical thinking- the professor's English was no better
