Swach Bharat (Part 5) Places of worship are an unique and enduring aspect of Indian culture that brings people together. While devotion is very high, it has not translated into “devotion with respect and responsibility for cleanliness of the surroundings” of places of worship. Promoting a narrative that “faith and prayers without contributing to and maintaining the cleanliness of the surroundings of places of worship weakens the strength of our worship and prayers”, is worth considering. It can potentially catalyze the Swach Bharat campaign. One way to think about this approach is for the government, private sector companies, NGOs, Associations, Societies, etc., to adopt a place of worship (a temple, mosque or church etc) in each city, town and village and be responsible to create world class infrastructure within a 500 meter radius of each place of workshop.

Swach Bharat (Part 4) No matter how great a society’s history may be, “Cleanliness and Hygiene” are critical parameters that validate the kind of “living culture” a society exhibits. Cleanliness and Hygiene also play a critical role in the emotional well being and physical heath of people. It transforms the living standards, strengthens pride in our home, street, village/town/city that we live in. There is a great opportunity to help people grow in their pride and joy of living in our amazing country by seeing, experiencing and participating in building this “living culture” that has high levels or hygiene and cleanliness. How can we do this at a pace that is fast yet successful and sustainable? To do this, we need to turn our places of worship.

Swach Bharat (Part 3) This includes: well laid roads, wide pavements for pedestrians, dustbins, lightings, good drainage, clean drains, clean walls without posters, well groomed greenery, public toilet facilities that are well maintained and checked regularly, proper infrastructure for street side stalls where possible, full time cleaning crew to ensure a world class, 1st world experience. This can potentially motivate and inspire more bubbles to be created within each city and town and village and accelerate the Swach Bharat initiative and catapult India to be recognized as a clean and hygienic country. There can be competitions and awards for the best areas around places of worship across the country. Communities and people can learn from others to better the cleanliness and hygienic standards in their respective communities. The funding can be part government, part company, part temple and part citizen funding.
