Madurai City is gearing up for Round 2 of Smart City Challenge. In Round 1 of this challenge, Madurai was ranked 28 out of 100. Madurai narrowly missed the opportunity to make it to the first list and this time the Madurai Municipal Corporation (MMC) is leaving no stone unturned to see Madurai in the next round of Smart cities.

Madurai Corporation is currently working with all the stake holders to revise and strengthen its Smart City proposal. The most crucial inputs for revising and strengthening the current proposal will have to come from the citizens of Madurai. Citizens engagement and feedback will help us in identifying priority areas and also pinpoint the drawbacks in the current proposal.

The current proposal has two Components-Area based Development and Pan city proposal

a) Area Based Development: Madurai Corporation has selected 3100 Acres around the Meenakshi Temple precinct for Retrofitting.

Some of the key components are:

1) Heritage preservation and Enhancement
2) Visitors Amenities and Tourism infrastructure
3) IT integration for aiding Tourists and Citizens
4) Improving Urban infrastructure

b) Pan City Proposal: This proposal includes pan city smart solutions for the benefit of the entire city by using ICT and thereby improving governance and delivery of public services. This envisages developing an integrated City Management and Control Centre (ICMCC) with the following components

1) Smart Water and Sewerage Management System
2) Intelligent Public Transport, Parking and Traffic Control Systems
3) Street Light Monitoring and Management system
4) Emergency Response and Surveillance system
5) Waste Collection and Transportation Monitoring system
6) Integrated platform for E-governance

MMC is requesting all the stakeholders to offer their valuable suggestions and comments to improve the current proposal.

Political leaders should change their mind to keep all cities clean and neat. Most of the places in India, very dirty and we are unable to walk in the street. We should take measures and means to keep city clean and neat.

It's great to see Madurai Corporation listed in the top participants list of Swachch Bharat Mission. However, the city doesn't seem to appear any different than how it was. Please don't select the top contenders based on what they submit. Instead perform a test, conduct a poll to finalize the top contenders. Also, strict rules must be imposed against open defecation and spitting. Otherwise, people will litter the place in a few minutes no matter how hard the scavengers work.

Sir, the government is building everything... All these can be appreciated... But, the maintenance is very poor owing to various reasons ( Improper allocation of funds, laziness of employees, corruption etc.) Impose strict rules under Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan. It's really painful to see people spit just before the Scavengers who take immense pain to clean the place. You have great potential, sir. Expecting a lot from your government.

to be a smart city corporation does not require funds what it needs to do is to eliminate corruption in its office and give better life to its Madurai residents. some of the bribe list of your office: 1)water connection the bribe goes beyond Rs 25000 2)for changing assessment number your officials are charging Rs 4000 per house 3)for birth certificate Rs 200 and the list goes on. so if you really want to be the smart city eliminate corruption.

Any further construction around Meenakshi Temple might not protect or might cause damage to the temple structures, so Madurai Corporation should give serious consideration about it. 3100 acres around Meenakshi Amman Temple is unbelievable and looks like an eyewash, let corporation make clear where they have 3100 acres around Meenakshi Amman Temple. already existing visitor amenities are not well maintained so what is the point of creating more visitors amenities.

A Smart City Must be First of All Clean, Communicable, & Pollution Free... And Introduction of By-Cycle as a prime mode of communication... Removal of Un-Authorized Vendors & Illegal Encroachments.

sir madurai is tourist city and it display the heritage , culture and tradition of India so keeping in that mind please develop a infrastructure which also display the same thing with modern facility. public places like bus stop can be constructed in such a form which includes the structure similar to sculpture in Madurai. Cleaning city's should be given first importance and should make sure it will remain same. City should be friendly to tourists and also display  Indian heritage.
