Suggestion for Special Budget Allocation for Road Safety Technology (Union Budget 2026–27) Road accidents in India are largely caused by non-use of turn indicators while turning and the use of mobile phones during driving. Penal measures alone have not been sufficient to change driver behaviour. It is suggested that the Union Budget 2026–27 provide a special allocation for technology-based road safety solutions. A Smart Indicator System can ensure mandatory use of turn indicators by providing alerts, limiting speed, or auto-activating indicators when a vehicle turns. In addition, a Driving-linked Mobile Alert System can restrict full mobile phone ringing while the vehicle is in motion, allowing calls to be attended only after the vehicle is safely parked. Such measures can be implemented in new and existing vehicles and can significantly reduce road accidents.
