India is one of the leaders in sustainable development and clean energy. With the Hon PM Narendra Modi-led government’s reform-oriented, environment-friendly policies, the country has time & again shown that sound environmental policies can pave the way to a sound economy.

At the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in 2021, PM Shri Narendra Modi announced the ‘LiFE’, a mission to bring individual behavioural change at the forefront of the global climate action narrative. LIFE or Lifestyle for Environment along with the ‘Pro Planet People’ movement, aims to strengthen the efforts to overcome climate change.

LiFE will replace the prevailing 'use-and-throw’ thinking with an environmentally conscious lifestyle. The Mission is to create a global community of ‘Pro-Planet People’ (P3), who with their shared commitment will adopt and promote environmentally friendly lifestyles.

Individual Efforts Are Key to Climate Commitment

India's traditional knowledge strongly positions it to lead the narrative of addressing climate change. Like many other mass movements, LiFE aims to inspire climate action based on the mantra of ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’.

MyGov invites you to share your ideas and suggestions on how to adapt to an environmentally conscious lifestyle.

Understanding the strength of this sector and its keepers, the government has announced various schemes for farmers in India. From creation of the National Agriculture Market (eNAM) to forming the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture along with other key reforms, it continues to provide much-needed relief to farmers.

Sustainable agriculture avoids hazardous pesticides and fertilizers. As a result, farmers are able to produce fruits, vegetables and other crops that are safer for consumers, workers, and surrounding communities. Through careful and proper management of livestock waste, sustainable farmers can protect humans from exposure to pathogens, toxins, and other hazardous pollutants.

India was far behind in the adoption of organic farming to many reasons. It has achieved fast development in organic agriculture and now becomes one of the most prominent organic farmers in the world. Organic farming has a meaningful impact on the health of India by securing sustainable development and makes a sustainable Farming in India.

Sustainable agriculture in India allows us to produce and enjoy healthy foods and textile needs without compromising the strength of coming generations to do the same. The core to sustainable farming in India is finding the right balance between the need for food production and the protection of ecosystems.

The Indian government and private agricultural sector stakeholders need to come together and ensure that sustainable farming practices are ingrained in the country’s farming activities. By infusing technology, leading agritech platforms can effectively support farmers transitioning from conventional to sustainable agriculture. This would help improve yield production and ensure that farming practices reduce negative environmental impact, along with incentivising farmers to adopt these climate-friendly practices.

As against conventional farming, sustainable farming offers to provide healthy food by transitioning to agriculture that can adapt to unavoidable climate change whilst preserving biodiversity, sustaining the quality of soils, and improving the livelihood of farmers. Practising sustainable agriculture also includes using a new range of biological solutions that address some of the core UN SDG goals, especially around clean water, sustainable communities and climate action.

Organic farming works reasonably well as a niche segment within an industrialised agricultural system. Producers save money by eliminating chemical inputs, and higher selling prices compensate for the lower yields from organic produce. However, when it comes to feeding a growing population with a limited number of people practising agriculture, one cannot ignore the role of synthetic fertilisers in reducing labour and pest infestations while increasing yields. Apart from a minor population of privileged consumers willing to pay a slightly higher price for products labelled as ‘organic’, the long-term benefits of organic farming are relatively limited when it comes to sustaining the enormous agricultural needs of a country like India.

As the agriculture sector progressively adopts more eco-friendly practices, especially given the threat of global warming and climate change, one of the most common misconceptions arises regarding organic and sustainable farming. At first glance, both organic and sustainable agriculture appear homogeneous concepts that, at the minimum, are working towards the same goal of meeting society’s agriculture-related needs without harming the environment.
