Waste management is an important requirement for ecologically sustainable development. Efficient sorting of waste is a major issue in today’s society. The main goals of this discussion are to come up with solutions for the following problems using technology as a tool.

1) Reducing waste production
2) Ensuring that wastes are properly disposed
3) Recycling and re-using disposed products

“Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” or the "Clean India Mission" is India's biggest cleanliness campaign that aims to accomplish the vision of "Clean India". Waste management is an integral part of this campaign. To assist the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” initiative, projects may be setup to create products which are solar-powered trash receptacle and trash compactor that alerts sanitation crews of municipal authorities, when it is full.

Also E-Waste (obsolete, discarded, broken and surplus electrical and electronic devices) is of immediate and long term concern as the industry is unregulated and recycling can lead to major environmental degradation posing a major threat to human health.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a new generation technology which allows integration of small devices/gadgets with web based system .The devices send signals through sensors using constraint application protocol (CoAP), Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) etc. and interact with the web-based system using the HTTP protocol, So the existing solution architectures are getting extended.

We would like to welcome your ideas on how a smart waste management system using IoT can be implemented in order to achieve the target of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”.

The unutilized land of Indian Rail at water filling stations in coaches touching Ganga river from Haridwar to Kolkata in its Ist phase, may be used for installation of tecnofriendly Sewage and waste management plants under PPP say Larsen and Tubro or so with a view to visible transformed India. The idea is for increasing income IR, generating additional energy, increasing employment and for visible Swach Bharat and efforts to clean Ganga before 2019 and expandable for collection of waste, sewage

Wastes should be divided into 1.Biodegradable & 2.Plastics and each household to be given 2 nos. dustbin accordingly to segregate wastes. These are then to be collected by local housekeeping crew who carefully keep them in bigger dustbins which in turn to be collected by the municipal authorities. Using these wastes as Feed, Bio gas plants & power generation plants to be built by the local Municipal authorities of the cities. In this way we can make our cities clean as well as generate power.

The bio degradable waste management is OK taking shape. The waste generated out of junk metal, plastic, glass, ceramics from electrical, electronics, machine tools, mill, car are real threat.Segregation and recycling may not be cost effective. These could be compressed with suitable adhesives to use in construction of boundary walls, road dividers.

Biogas generation units should be placed at distant locations, organic waste from kitchen, leaves from trees should be used as fuel. Plastic, organic, electric waste should be connected separately. Plastic and electronic waste should also be recycled.

I would like to strongly suggest to concentrate on usage of recyclable plastics by banning laminated plastics which are non-recyclable. Particularly majority of foid products like sakt, atra, namkins etc. Are being packed in to non recyclable plastics (laminates), unlike milk , water etc whicha are packed in recyclable plastic. Even various state govts like madhyapradesh, chhatshgarh, karnatak, andgrapradesh, himachal etc are purchasing salt in non recyclable plastics, this should be taken care.

Key to best waste management is proper segregation of waste at source. ie. kitchen of household. Never put organic kitchen waste into plastic bags, waste should be stored and provided to municipality in three forms. 1. Bio-degradable (All kitchen waste, without bones) 2. Recyclable (Plastic waste , paper waste, bones of meat etc) 3. Hazardous waste : Batteries, broken glass or lamps, non-plastic electronic waste. Each type can be recycled, if they are collected separately.

Since the organic waste will be utilised by plant for growth daily waste can be filled in each pot on rotation basis In addition to own requirement the potted soil with pots can be sold to generate employment So twin purpose is saved plus healthy vegetables for house hold

This is about urban waste management .The organic waste of kitchen and household can be managed. Each household require 25 pots of 1.5 ht and 1.5 feet dia .Daily waste has to be spread in this and over this waste 3 inch thick builders sand(granite powder) has to be filled daily. When pot is full it can be used for planting vegetables or other plants .The builders sand is an excellent promoter of microbial activity because of differential pore spaces and promote excellent gro

Two industries should be identified which have a symbiotic kind of relationship. For example,NTPC and any building material manufacturing unit, automobile and construction industry because shredded tires are being used for base isolation of building.Similarly timber industry and water purification plant because sawdust has the potential to purify water. The advantage will be the immediate use of a product for a value added product. This approach will pay in the long run and solve pollution problem

In all municipality system there should be 3 types of waste box provision to each house of its territory. 1Plastic, 2.Organic .3. Solid, Also news paper waste should be taken cared by municipality in door to door collection with better engagement of people. Plastic waste can be recycled through recycling by local entrepreneurs. Organic waste should be converted to manure and given to local govt. farms for distribution to farmers at nominal rates for production of vegetables only.
