Waste management is an important requirement for ecologically sustainable development. Efficient sorting of waste is a major issue in today’s society. The main goals of this discussion are to come up with solutions for the following problems using technology as a tool.

1) Reducing waste production
2) Ensuring that wastes are properly disposed
3) Recycling and re-using disposed products

“Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” or the "Clean India Mission" is India's biggest cleanliness campaign that aims to accomplish the vision of "Clean India". Waste management is an integral part of this campaign. To assist the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” initiative, projects may be setup to create products which are solar-powered trash receptacle and trash compactor that alerts sanitation crews of municipal authorities, when it is full.

Also E-Waste (obsolete, discarded, broken and surplus electrical and electronic devices) is of immediate and long term concern as the industry is unregulated and recycling can lead to major environmental degradation posing a major threat to human health.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a new generation technology which allows integration of small devices/gadgets with web based system .The devices send signals through sensors using constraint application protocol (CoAP), Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) etc. and interact with the web-based system using the HTTP protocol, So the existing solution architectures are getting extended.

We would like to welcome your ideas on how a smart waste management system using IoT can be implemented in order to achieve the target of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”.

If possible the manufacturing of polythene bags and their availability is to stopped so that everyone is moving with clothed bags. This solves one issue. every colony has to have compost pit.

Treated sewage water may be used to run mineral processing plants which are operating at water deficit areas in Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu etc. Special incentives may be extended to mines in those areas to set up a sewage treatment plant and use that water so that it serves a dual purpose - fresh water is left for other uses and sewage which invariably flows untreated into water bodies is treated and used. Compost can also be used in nearby fields to promote organic farming.

All city and town Organic waste should be sent to Urban Areas and Villages to produce Bio- Gas plant. By having a consolidated pits in Villages/ Towns, Bio-Gas can be distributed to all houses in village. Otherwise, it can be Decentralised.

On the subject of Swatch Bharat, this months issue of RD indicated painting walls in public places using special hydrophobic paint by the German National Rail company in Cologne,to give perpetrators a dose of their own medicine: any stream of liquid/urine aimed at the wall will bounce back at roughly the same angle! I strongly recommend this be used in Public places, especially bus depots!

There are technology to convert waste into wealth. For storage of waste, at strategic locations facilities need to be created for dumping the waste collected from various sources and machines should be installed in all such location to convert the waste into wealth ( may be generating power, energy etc) depending on the waste. This would minimize the cost of transportation and also spreading of fol smell and other diseases while transporting.

If we are thinking about solid waste management, first we have ample amount of dustbins which i don't see anywhere in my city where im living. And also, there should be measures for proper management of waste like landfills, Power generation from waste, waste classification and also recycling centers. Moreover, for other kind of waste like sewage waste we can have like Natural gas generation from waste #TransformIndia#SwachhBharatAbhiyan, #CleanIndiaMission

Less waste should be generated by all Indians. Kitchen Waste should be kept in a pit in the house, after few months, it gets converted into Fertiliser. I have been doing this for years. All should avoid plastics, carry your own cloth bag, as Indian used to do earlier. All products like Gutka, Pan Masala should be sold in boxes & not in small plastic pouches, which are thrown on the road after consuming & also consumers spit on the road, offenders should be fined. Rarely any Spiter is fined

Handling of biodegradeable waste.Segregation to be mandatory so that construction waste, recycle able waste, are not mixed up with food waste.Such waste to be stored in plastic containers with wheels so that they can be easily moved up a ramp attached to low body trucks, which will collect the full containers and unload empty containers,to minimise double handling of waste from bins. This scheme will be suitable for small towns with minimal investment, and also for large localities in big cities.

In case if sewage treatment and waste management plants are installed at all water filling Rail stations under PPP on the available and unused land of IR as proposed earlier, the waste and sewage would be available from such stations and is municipal area and the collection of it may be expanded to all petrol pumps as a collection point where all four or more wheeler will download their waste or otherwise as a matter of social rule which in turn will keep the roads or rail path free from waste.
