Waste management is an important requirement for ecologically sustainable development. Efficient sorting of waste is a major issue in today’s society. The main goals of this discussion are to come up with solutions for the following problems using technology as a tool.

1) Reducing waste production
2) Ensuring that wastes are properly disposed
3) Recycling and re-using disposed products

“Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” or the "Clean India Mission" is India's biggest cleanliness campaign that aims to accomplish the vision of "Clean India". Waste management is an integral part of this campaign. To assist the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” initiative, projects may be setup to create products which are solar-powered trash receptacle and trash compactor that alerts sanitation crews of municipal authorities, when it is full.

Also E-Waste (obsolete, discarded, broken and surplus electrical and electronic devices) is of immediate and long term concern as the industry is unregulated and recycling can lead to major environmental degradation posing a major threat to human health.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a new generation technology which allows integration of small devices/gadgets with web based system .The devices send signals through sensors using constraint application protocol (CoAP), Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) etc. and interact with the web-based system using the HTTP protocol, So the existing solution architectures are getting extended.

We would like to welcome your ideas on how a smart waste management system using IoT can be implemented in order to achieve the target of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”.

When people go for a new computer or mobile phone, the old ones can be gifted to less privileged ones in villages and slums through a collection center. Old text books, pencils, refill pens, slates etc can also be collected.

meat waste is one of the most polluting item in city waste. All such waste can be converted to food for pigs ducks, hen and fish just by drying and grinding to powder or pellets.

All organic waste in cities can be compressed in hydrolic press to remove water content which can be filtered and purified, and the solid matter can be used as good fuel to replace wood and charcoal.

In every panchayath, municipal/corporation ward, collection centers can be opened where people can bring in clean plastic items or broken glasses or metal items or e waste (like mobiles, computers printers etc.) and they can get a nominal payment based on weight. Plastic is a good binding material which can be mixed with tar for road repairs or with earth (clay) at melting point to make water proof building blocks using existing machinery for interlocks & hollow bricks.

If waste is collected in mixed state it is of no use but if we collect it in category we can recycle them efficiently and can generate revenue from it. this revenue will be shared among individuals for supporting this system by storing waste in category. we already have chain of well established waste plucker in india , if we purchase plastic waste at higher rate from them then I am sure we can get rid of plastic waste from nation, as they will dig out plastic from no where to earn extra cash.

In India People are less interested in waste management , as they consider it as waste of time. But every thing which earn rewards attracts people. My idea is to include reward point for successfully managing the waste for each individual. just like Big bazar purchase our waste at higher rate and return them as coupon or discount. similarly if we can adopt such system where every individual effort can be measured and rewarded we can design life long sustainable system.

I am suggesting here slightly different thing. Millions of plastic spoons are used once & thrown every day, creating huge amount of waste. I suggest using edible spoons instead of plastic ones. These spoons are manufactured by a Hyderabad based company having heir site www.bakeys.com/ediblecutlery or it can be searched by “bakey’s edible cutlery”. The spoons are manufactured by using different food grains & are to be eaten after their use. These are nutritious, tasty and environment friendly.

Hi, Everyone talk on Waste Management but very few implement at home. A segregation of Paper Waste / Glass waste / Dry Waste and Wet Waste itself reduce significant amount of waste. Then if we follow own discipline, waste on road in the form Plastic Bottles, Biscuits / Chocolate wrappers / Snacks packing will get minimised. In the different gardens in the city, with help of local group, organic fertiliser (Amrut mitti & vegetable residue) manufacturing project can be start.
