India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

The problem with Indian agriculture is that, it's supply driven. Farmers produce what they can easily without even thinking for a while whether or not they will be able to sell it after harvesting. Make an expert committee to predict which item's demand is likely to go up in the near future so that farmers can grow those items and demand a good bargain as well as there will be minimal post harvest losses.

Scrap APMC and allow farmers to sell directly to Food processing Companies. Also create facilities for distribution of excess fruits and vegetable to institutions involved in public food programs at nominal cost.

Much more preservation could be done by the food processing, using pulp or the product should have to process in such a way so that it could be preserved. Example like durk, golden crown they are processing and preserved foods.

One approach could be to improve cold storage facilities. Other is to improve transportation via refrigerated systems. Also, some of the other techniques are improvement in packaging material quality and design that need to be upgraded and innovative ripening (Followed in Europe). Thank you

we should follow the system followed for milk by big organisations like Anand in Gujarat. It is also possible that we follow some thing white revolution for milk. cooperative societies have a greater role to play in coordinating with the actual suppliers, collection under one roof by another big organisation and then distribution to retail or whole sale market. The warehousing facilities and infrastructure facilities like electricity, water and connectivity of rail and road facilities improv

First of all the fragmentation of the agricultural lands should be prevented. The state and central government must work together in developing the infrastructure facilities for storage and packaging in rural areas. This cost should be shared with the local agriculture society/union, thus the farmers will pay attention to maintain these facilities. Government should avoid middleman and directly pay the price of the supply to the farmer's bank account. Thus farmers will benifit much!

Corporates or FDI shall be roped in and we have to go by the western model of allowing them into building robust supply chains so that they take care of cold storages as well. That will also help in keeping our farm products safe and bring more people into organized sector. Thereby, farm products are put to good use because FDI shall bring world class technology in food processing. Many people will be employed by that sector too.

Contd...It is in the interest of the farmer as also the Nation that urgent attention is paid towards the removal of this anomalous situation. For the farmer, it is a question of bread and butter as also smooth and secure life for himself and the family. And, for the Nation, it is a perpetual loss, a loss which effects its economy as also its non-performance on such front makes it lose face at the world stage. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT URGENT SOLUTION IS SOUGHT TO BE PUT ON THE HORIZON.
