India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Contd...It is in the interest of the farmer as also the Nation that urgent attention is paid towards the removal of this anomalous situation. For the farmer, it is a question of bread and butter as also smooth and secure life for himself and the family. And, for the Nation, it is a perpetual loss, a loss which effects its economy as also its non-performance on such front makes it lose face at the world stage. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT URGENT SOLUTION IS SOUGHT TO BE PUT ON THE HORIZON.

1 Identify each Tehsil/District where we require big and advanced Warehouse facility, for that GOI invite & encourage corporate houses to open and maintain Warehouses and for that give them Tax benefit 2.Warehouses must have their logistics to carry the produces from farmers to warehouse on regular basis, encourage farmers to take the benefit of that & charge them very nominal cost. 3. Make national level advance warehouse scheme under which invite corporate houses to play significant role, give them opportunity to open, maintain & safeguard the crop

There should be a places earmarked for vegetable markets in the center of every village ,town and city. The govt should provide big space for such markets with shelter, refrigeration facility, current etc. They can collect a nominal rent in return. Every local news channel should announce the rate of different products-vegetables, fruits ,flowers etc. This will make the farmer and consumer aware of the rates and will keep the middle men at bay.

Even gram / zilla / town panchayath's can play a better role in this regard. They can be the information kiosk for the producers, consumers both Before cultivation a farmer can enroll his details and the crop details which he is about to produce.wherein all others details need to be a open book information. When he plans for next cultivation he can get the details of how much produce he need to cultivate to match the demand. Demand can be analyzed by previous year's data.

Mainly we have to check the Process of SCM & in SCM logistics is main part means Right things at right place in right time, then only we can avoid.Mainly we have to check the proper packing of fruits & vegetable, before supply any items we have to check 3 points ,one is fruit/Vegetable's quality,as per quality we have to pack its properly 2nd point is quality of products as per quality we can reduce the problems & 3rd is proper transportation. in this way we can reduce post harvest losses. good.

Along with cold storage and other storage methods, we can go for starting a superfast train for transporting food to cities just as coal is transported but a little faster.

The agriculture produce is such a valuable asset that allowing a part of it going waste, is something that calls for quick remedial steps. It is a National waste -- both in terms of man-hours and financial losses. Besides, on a personal level, it burdens the the producer, no end. It can well be imagined the state of mind of farmer when, after harvesting, he sees his produce perishing, for no fault of his. THAT DESTROYS HIS STRENGTH, BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL BESIDES HIS FINANCIAL STRESS.
