Several studies have shown that school children do not seem to acquire age appropriate skills in reading, writing and numeracy. There is a need to explore the various approaches to improve teaching–learning at the elementary stage. The objective of this theme is to understand the issues of low learning achievement levels in elementary schooling, assess the system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation and suggest ways and methods of improving the learning outcomes of school children which would result in enhancing the quality of elementary education.

Dear sir, I have gone through the new education policy for school education which details many aspects in detail, but I see nothing mentioned about teacher professional development (in-service). The teacher development is the heart of any educational reform. Educational reforms that do not include teachers and their professional development have not been successful (Villegas-Rdimers, 2003). So please include some comprehensive plan for teachers continues professional development.

Letting the child to be free in the open and giving him enough freedom to play and admire nature would be more beneficial to him as of his age..rather than being kept inside always.

Yes, truely the child should not be forced to do anything as of his age but instead the environment around him should be made open and conducive so that he loves and starts to inquire about the things.. visual based approaches in the form of art, films, music would be able to create a better imprint on their mind...his tender mind should be kept open

In first year, children of primary school should not be forced to read or write anything, instead they should be asked to draw whatever they think, on a paper. Drawing will not only be interesting for them, but they will also develop a creative mind usually. Various movies (related to science and technology) and cartoon films could be shown to them, after which the teacher can ask them what did they learn. Likewise, school teacher should take them out, to parks, historical monuments, museums.

The government must understand the importance of elementary education in child's mother tongue. Itt is said in our constitution that this is the responsibility of the government to provide basic/primary/elementary education to every child in his/her mother tongue. But, the reality is that we give so much stress on English language. Give the child a chance to learn basic things in his/her own language, then move towards English. Second, make the school environment child friendly, not a burden.
