Several studies have shown that school children do not seem to acquire age appropriate skills in reading, writing and numeracy. There is a need to explore the various approaches to improve teaching–learning at the elementary stage. The objective of this theme is to understand the issues of low learning achievement levels in elementary schooling, assess the system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation and suggest ways and methods of improving the learning outcomes of school children which would result in enhancing the quality of elementary education.

Todays elementary education is not properly guided to the students and it is only based on CCE. there are some drawbacks in evaluation of the students only by some skills. before it there were written test and oral tests which were more favorable and ensures the students to proper guidance. i my opinion i feel that RTE (Right to education) is a correct way but there are some confusion among the teachers and parents. first we should sort out it and implement the new education policy.

Teachers should divide the class into 3 Categories. Cat A: Performing students, Cat B: Average Students, Cat C non performing students. Special weekly sessions must be organised for Cat C students. Besides, The teacher should also understand the learning pattern specially of Cat C students viz Visual, auditory or Kinesthetic and then plan her lesson accordingly. a Third party assessment of students weekly/Monthly/Quaterly/Half yearly must be done and the performing teacher must be rewarded.

One of the biggest reasons for poor learning outcomes is Poor Teacher Student ratio in the class room. In most of the schools teacher Student ratio is 1: 60 or above. so it becomes practically impossible to attend the need of each and every student. Teacher student ration should not exceed from 1:30 at any cost. if it exceeds then it would be utter injustice to the teacher and the students. The government should lay a robust rule to ensure that schools strictly follow 1:30 teacher student ratio.
