The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has been mandated by the TRAI Act, 1997 to regulate the tariffs offered by the Telecom Service Provider for its various services. The telecommunications sector in India has witnessed several changes in the past few years in terms of the tariff offerings of various telecom service providers. This has not only resulted in an exponential increase in the use of telecom services but has also resulted in the tariffs of telecom services in India being amongst the lowest in the world.

In the last few months, many concerns have been raised about the health of the Indian telecom sector and the need to fix a floor price for telecom services. TRAI has so far observed a policy of forbearance in respect of telecom tariffs for valid reasons. It gives the service providers the freedom and flexibility to design their tariff offerings as per the demands of the market. It gives free play to the forces of healthy competition and has resulted in an exponential growth in the Indian telecom sector in the past two decades. Most economists also advise against market interventions by the regulator in tariff fixation.

However, ensuring the provision of ever-increasing data consumption and a good Quality of Service requires a lot of investment in maintaining and improving telecom infrastructure. Fast pace of technological changes in the sector require huge capital investments. Telecom sector is the infrastructure provider for many other sectors of the economy. Thus, making sure that the telecom sector remains healthy and its orderly growth are equally important.

Considering this aspect, a consultation paper on “Tariff Issues of Telecom Services” has been issued on 17th December, 2019 to invite comments from all the stakeholders, on various issues relating to tariff in telecom sector.

The consultation paper on “Tariff Issues of Telecom Services” has been uploaded on TRAI’s website (www.trai.gov.in). The written comments on the issues raised in the consultation paper are invited from the stakeholders by 17th January, 2020 and counter-comments by 31st January, 2020.

Earlier a pack of 35 was available on airtel with validity of 28 days but it has increased it to 49. It's injustice with those who don't have to make phone calls. So, a pack of minimum amount with extended validity should be made available for those who make less phone calls. It will be a bliss for me like students. A progressive tax can be applied in case of tariff too. Different sections of society should be provided with different recharge plans... EWS should get relief in this case too...

Decision whatever it may be, it is to be in favour of common man. Consider all concerns of telecom operators but the next step should not effect on people because any sector is for serve to people

Any service provider having 1 Lakh / 10 Lakhs / 1 Crore / 10 Crores... Customers, who are doing MINIMUM RECHARGE LIKE Rs. 49 [earlier Rs. 35] companies get Rs. 49 Lakhs / Rs. 4.9 Crores / Rs. 49 Crores / Rs. 490 Crores, whether the customer uses or not. Customer is losing money. Service Providers are CHEATING AND ENJOYING CUSTOMERS MONEY. TRAI, TELECOM MINISTRY MUST THESE CUSTOMERS BY LOWERING CALL COST AND ALSO HAVING THE RECHARGE AMOUNT INTO MAIN ACCOUNT WITHOUT EXPIRY OF 28 DAYS.

Telecom Service Providers must provide good service for what Customers pay. Earlier Customers could recharge any amount and use when they wish/desire without losing money. Since the introduction of minimum tariff/recharge to keep the number active for 28 days, other than unlimited plans - RECHARGE AMOUNT would be available to USE ANYTIME WITHOUT EXPIRY DATE. Since few months AIRTEL and IDEA are crediting RECHARGE amount to expiring account in 28 days. Help Customers from losing unused money.

Either the TRAI should be provided with enough teeth to tame the 'incorrigible' telecom service providers (mainly the private players) or it should be abolished forthwith. Our past experiences reveal that their all powerful Association has been calling the shots when it comes to the fixation of the call/Internet charges or levying of penalty on erring service providers for the call drops. Mind you, Gio, first allured the end-users by offering free services but soon showed its true colours. OMG!
