Every year 27th September is celebrated as World Tourism Day. This year the theme of World Tourism Day is Tourism and Rural Development. Tourism helps rural communities hold onto their unique natural and cultural heritage, supporting conservation projects, including those safeguarding endangered species, lost traditions or flavours. Tourism has proven to be a lifeline for many rural communities. The sector is not just a leading source of employment, particularly for women and youth but it also provides opportunities for territorial cohesion and socio-economic inclusion for even the most remote regions.
Our villages and the people who live there are a true custodians and manifestation of our culture.
As we work towards more sustainable development of our country, developing related hard and soft infrastructure and promoting tourism in rural India is much required.

Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with MyGov invites you to share your views ideas on Rural India- How it can leverage tourism.

Talking to the natives of that village area, we will know about the architectural features of there local infrastructures and houses, Food specialties of their village, traditional dressing attires, rituals, stories since ages, etc. Recreating these houses, and making food stalls promoting local dishes and requesting locals to wear traditional attires occasionally and accordingly will be of historical importance and herritage! this will surely influence tourists to visit!

RBI defines rural areas as those areas with a population of less than 49,000 (tier -3 to tier-6 cities). It is generally said that the rural areas house up to 70% of India's population. Rural India contributes a large chunk to India's GDP by way of agriculture, self-employment, services, construction etc.

Rural roads contracts are taken by panchayat members under benami names. Laid road quality is very bad. None is held responsible. Tourists will be willing to come to rural places only if road connectivity is good. Govt can encourage unemployed youths to form an association and handover such jobs to them. They will maintain properly and also be responsible.

India has the fourth most considerable numbers of world heritage sites and the world. Benefits of Rural Tourism (I) Employment generation – The major advantage of promoting rural tourism is the creation of employment opportunities, especially for those who do not have agricultural land to meet their economic needs. Preservation of local tradition – As tourist visit rural areas to feel authentic rural settings, the tourism provides economic incentives to preserve cultures and traditions.
