Every year 27th September is celebrated as World Tourism Day. This year the theme of World Tourism Day is Tourism and Rural Development. Tourism helps rural communities hold onto their unique natural and cultural heritage, supporting conservation projects, including those safeguarding endangered species, lost traditions or flavours. Tourism has proven to be a lifeline for many rural communities. The sector is not just a leading source of employment, particularly for women and youth but it also provides opportunities for territorial cohesion and socio-economic inclusion for even the most remote regions.
Our villages and the people who live there are a true custodians and manifestation of our culture.
As we work towards more sustainable development of our country, developing related hard and soft infrastructure and promoting tourism in rural India is much required.

Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with MyGov invites you to share your views ideas on Rural India- How it can leverage tourism.

I very strongly believe that rural India can leverage its tourism by protecting, preserving and highlighting its biodiversity resources. Inviting tourists to visits pristine untouched wetlands, forest tracts, lakes and rivers can fetch valuable revenue that can help support various other industries. The Basai Wetland in the outskirts of Gurugram, Haryana is a prime example of wetland that is home to thousands of migratory birds. Developing this wetland can help bring revenue.

Create an experience package where tourist can stay with locals and experience their day to day lives first hand. Like stay with a family, eat their home cooked meals, work in their fields, sleep in the open under the night sky, etc. Already done in players like Airbnb and TripAdvisor.

For this primary thing is tourism minister in each state should change his mentality.I have noticed whenever this type of portfolio is allocated , CM or FM of the state won't consider his suggestion in developing tourism instead look at how much they get benefitted. There so many old temples, statues, historical places still exists in our state. But, we have poor infrastructure.Central tourism from Central government should give assignment to identify and develop within 6 months or 1year.

Connectivity ( transportation, Network availability), Infrastructure (access to clean water, development of road networks, amenities for tourists) and maintenance of landmarks / tourist attractions are the main need of the hour. Flea markets for the local artisans and handicrafts, training to locals on setting up home stays for hosting tourists, proper guides for the local attractions, are few of the things, the tourism ministry to focus on, to develop tourism in the rural sector.
