Section 161 of Railway act indicates “If any person driving or leading a vehicle is negligent in crossing an unmanned level crossing, he shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to one year.”

Section 131 of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that “Every driver of a motor vehicle at the approach of any unguarded railway level crossing shall cause the vehicle to stop and the driver of the vehicle shall cause the conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person in the vehicle to walk up to the level crossing and ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side and then pilot the motor vehicle across such level crossing, and where no conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person is available in the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle shall get down from the vehicle himself to ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side before the railway track is crossed”

However due to non-following of relevant rules by the road users, many accidents are occurring resulting in loss of precious life  at unmanned level crossings.

Suggest solutions for reducing accidents at unmanned level crossings.

The provision of opening and closing the gates of buses in Delhi is with the driver. Similarly, consider providing the responsibility of opening and closing of the level crossing gates to the drivers or the guards of the trains

1. Electronic sensor based railway crossing should be made which are monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day. 2. The gates of such crossing should be fully automated and linked with train timing. 3. For emergency purpose a two men team consists of an maintenance engineer and signal man should be kept. 4. Two separate gates on both sides of the railway crossing should be installed at a certain distance from the tracks. Gate which is further towards the track will close first then the secondary one.

also.. there are no ticket checkers at all. many without ticket travelers get into the train daily. and many travelers having 2nd class ticket travel in 1st class openly. so there is no meaning to buy 1st class pass which is thrice costly than that of 2nd class. there is no control over all this mess. these may be small things in terms of administrative matters but it's one of big problem which daily travelers are facing. hopefully govt. looks into it.

Railways can install sensor based stop gates at unmanned level crossing. These can be designed to detect train movement on tracks and accordingly lower the stop gates. This would also help railways to cut costs on staff it deploys at level crossings

i am a daily traveler of Mumbai suburban railway. here one can see no security measures at all at any station. not enough railway police. also I feel there must be strict punishment like minimum 15 days jail for anyone caught crossing the track. else, it's impossible to prevent line crossing accidents.

My name is Ram Kumar P.V. from Visakhapatnam.I had designed a model in such a way that we can increase the number of berths in the Sleeper Coach from 72 to 81 in number i.e.( 9 berths will be inserted additionally in 1 coach ) sir. In this process there is no need to make many changes in the coach sir. It requires very less investment for this process. We can apply the same principle for the old coaches which we are using and can change the interior to offer better comforts to the passengers.

Most of the cases happen in rural areas and i think we can not fully take the accident will not happen. But if we improve our train system by adding technology of sensor to recognize the vehicle and other things on its way, train must be stopped automatically. Our country is not much literate about this so we should be in this matter. Driver should have monitor and special features ,in case of Crossing technology will indicate the driver and train also.

Improve signal system Increase speed of all the trains by 20-30km(track ,rolling stock and signal and safety upgradation),will be far better money spent with immediate profits instead of bullet trains Make passenger segment no profit no loss, cross subsidise 40% of general class expenditure from remaining 4 classes.. Complete freight corridors fast, connect them to ports. will earn about 5 billion $ profit annually then disinvest 49% of govt share will lead to about 2 lakh crore generation.
