Concept

Mother's Day is a celebration honouring the mother of the family, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. This day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year and is an occasion to show your affection, respect and care towards your mother.

In the spirit of celebrating Mother’s day, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India is organizing a Contest inviting stories about mothers. The Contest shall commence from 8th May, 2016 for a month long duration, ending on 6th June, 2016.

The concept of this campaign is to promote the idea of children sharing anecdotes/ stories about their mother who has defied gender stereotypes, raised her voice against gender discrimination and championed the cause of gender equality and empowerment. This story should have left a long lasting impact and consequently led to a change in the mindset of her family and/or the community at large. The premise is based on the fact that relationship with mother is one of the closest and may be a strong influencer in shaping behaviours and attitudes of her children. A mother is also a source of inspiration and a role model for her children. When an anecdote/story is narrated about a mother, it can be used as a catalyst to bring about a positive change in societal mindset. This may further lead to a more gender sensitive society which recognizes the contributions of a mother, in particular and women, in general.

The objective of the contest is to engage with larger audience through sharing of stories about mothers, thereby encouraging inter-generational dialogue, sensitizing men and boys, being a role model for an empowered daughter. This also creates an opportunity for open conversations against gender discrimination, inequality and dis-empowerment, which in turn leads to a positive mindset change in the society.

Some of the suggested themes are gender equality and empowerment, gender discrimination, sexual harassment, domestic violence, social evils like dowry and early marriage and so on.

But you stood like a pillar in my support, resisting all those provocations – most of which were mean selfishness to get me married off to their relatives. They probably thought that you would be tempted to agree to their proposal and would prefer my brothers to me in expectation of future security. But you stood against all odds – your words to all of them were – “she wants to study, her father has put her in Delhi for her post graduation, let her study”. How can I thank you ?

Thank you Maa for making me a financially independent lady of today. I owe a lot to you, my present status has been possible only for your strong support in completing my study after the sudden demise of my father. After the death of my father when I was still an undergraduate student, many people were talking and advising you to call me back home from a far off place like Delhi – there were extreme financial hardships too, having to take care of my two younger brothers who were also studying.

I was born 4 years ago with so many health issues starting with having feeding tube, retarded physical and mental growth, can not walk, can not talk and with several disabilities. First two years, I have been struggling with throwing up 20 times a day with not sleeping at all in the night and seizures, I was taken care of, she sacrificed her life.Even she is the only one brought to me in this world knowing that I will be born with issues where as other people asked to terminate me;she is my MOM.

My mother, educated only till 8th Class, was a strong believer in the power of knowledge and education. She saw to it that all our siblings 4 daughters and two sons were educated with a college degree. She lived to see that all her grand daughters were too became graduates ,some professionals etc.She went through many hardship, but stayed focused on her ambition. If only every mother has such a vision most of the problems of our Nation can be solved. Only the mothers have such a power.

“My Mother is a Goddess- The Goddess of Small Things and 'Small People'. She is wise, intuitive and generous. To this day, she makes sure that nobody would pass our gates with an empty stomach. The homeless old woman, the man begging on the streets, the sick puppy, the women folk who sell fish, thirsty vendors or anybody for that matter is greeted with a warm smile, a cup of hot tea or delicious food, some money and a lot of respect. Her message is that of compassion and love."
