Varanasi has often been termed as the cradle of India’s culture. It is a city of scholars, writers, poets and thinkers. The Ganga flows through Varanasi but sadly even here the Ganga’s condition has become pitiable. This task seeks your ideas on a comprehensive plan to clean the Ganga in Varanasi and at the same time a re-development plan for the Ghats of the city.

Ghats of Varanasi is a heritage site and should be given respect to its design. Any cleaning process or up gradation should not allow the designer to fulfil his whims and fancies. We should concentrate on restoring the ghats and introducing basic amenities within this. The use of materials should compliment the existing use. Government should provide survey plans of the ghats so that we all designers can give our inputs. Make it easier for us to work on the proposal.

this scavenger boat can do a lot more than clean the river it also adds aqua c28 a Bio Catalyst to the water which makes the water more robust to fight the pollution on a molecular level. Best of all BOC is natural as u can see in the msds.

The basic idea is to improve the gas transfer rates in the water aka increase the dissolved oxygen. Then the water and indigenous bacteria will clean the water itself. the fats oils and greases present will break down into carbon food source.this process is far cheaper than what has been implemented in the past.

Sir in short my points: Along the bank of ganga we have infinite number of culverts draining into ganga and it is very difficult to stop them so along the same bank we can have larger drainage line under the ghats collecting all these drains( which include assi nala and one just before varuna river, the two major pollutants of ganga in vns) and finally draining into a water treatment plant. And for ghat cleaning awareness campaign.Much to suggest but lack of space.

Re-development of ghats should be such that it does not impact the historicity of Varanasi i.e. the new ghats should be exactly like the old one and should be made from the same type of stones as the old one and in any case should not be make up of concrete. Usage of polythene should be banned on the ghats. Underground drainage system and effluent treatment plants should be made in entire Varanasi city and no sewage should be allowed into the Ganga. Semi burnt bodies should not be allowed.

Approach to ghats should be diverted from other side rivrfront and bridge be designed like the one in pic and a new as well so that people coming in Car etc can reach ghats from the opposite bank side this will relieve the traffic pressure and develop new economic zones for trade with no 4 wheeler traffic allowed in old ghat area maintenance will be easier ghats need to be re built keeping their old designs intact Solar lights and Coloured LED highlights should be used to light up old ghats

The Ganges suffers from extreme pollution levels, which affect the 400 million people who live close to the river. Stop sewage from cities along the river's course, industrial waste and religious offerings wrapped in non-degradable plastics.- Jai Hind
