Millet is India's second largest exporter. According to "Smart Foods," millets are one of the oldest crops known to humans and can grow in adverse weather conditions with little irrigation. They were largely domesticated in the United States, Asia, and Africa as a cereal crop for evolving civilizations. Millets are classified as major millets, which include Sorghum, Bajra, and Ragi, and minor millets, which include Foxtail, Kodo, Barnyard, Proso, Browntop, and little millets. Millets are currently grown on 74 million acres in 131 countries, including India.

During the SCO summit, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of millets. Millets have long been a part of our agriculture, culture, and civilization. The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2023 to be the International Year of Millets. We are delighted to report that India's proposal has been accepted by more than 70 countries.
