Ministry of Information and Broadcasting
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is responsible for formulating and administering policies relating to information, broadcasting, the press, films, and entertainment media in India. It serves as the primary interface for communicating government policies, schemes, and achievements to citizens through mass media — including radio, television, print, and digital platforms.
The Ministry is functionally organised into three wings — Information, Broadcasting, and Films — and oversees several key bodies:
- Press Information Bureau (PIB) – Disseminates information on government policies and programmes to print and electronic media.
- Prasar Bharati – India's public service broadcaster, operating All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD).
- Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) – Regulates and certifies films for public exhibition.
- Press Council of India – Preserves the freedom of the press and maintains standards of journalism.
Beyond regulation, the Ministry promotes the growth of India's media, film, and entertainment industry, supports skilling initiatives in animation, AI, and digital content creation, and works to expand broadcasting infrastructure to remote and underserved regions — strengthening India's information ecosystem and creative economy.
