Taxation is a necessary evil. It is needed to finance the various activities undertaken by the government. But it is also an instrument of social and economic policy. Taxation can be used to promote economic growth and stability, as well as to redistribute income.

While direct taxes are imposed on income and profits, indirect taxes are levied on goods and services. A major difference between direct and indirect tax is the fact that while direct tax is directly paid to the government, there is generally an intermediary for collecting indirect taxes from the end-consumer.

The disadvantages include: They may be highly regressive. Excise taxes on fuel may increase the price of this essential item (and other items too, because of increased transport costs) beyond the reach of poor people, if there are no exemptions.
