The Fit India Movement was launched by the Hon'ble Prime Minister on 29 August 2019 with the vision of ‘Hum Fit Toh India Fit’ and the message ‘Fitness ki Dose, Aadha Ghanta Roz’, to make fitness an integral part of everyday life. Over the years, the Movement has expanded its public outreach through flagship campaigns such as National Sports Day, Fit India Carnival, and Sundays on Cycle.

The Fit India School Certification Program is an initiative under the Fit India Movement, launched with the objective of making physical fitness an essential and everyday part of school life rather than an occasional or event-based activity. The program derives its statutory basis from the Gazette Notification and Operational Guidelines of the revised Khelo India Scheme (KIS), which formally provides for a school-level fitness certification mechanism.

This concept note presents the proposed new design of the Fit India School Certification Programme and invites inputs and suggestions from schools, teachers, parents, education administrators, sports bodies, and other stakeholders. The Programme seeks to build a strong, continuing relationship between Fit India and schools by promoting fitness among students, teachers, and staff. It recognises schools that provide regular physical activity and sports opportunities and gives parents a transparent, reliable reference for making informed school choices.

The underlying policy premise is that the school is the first formal institution after home where fitness habits can be systematically taught, practiced, and reinforced in a child's life.

The Fit India Movement is a remarkable initiative which enables us to rethink about "health is wealth". Preserving health is precious not only for ourselves but for the whole country. A healthy population is a sign of a developed nation. We all should take initiatives to nurture good health activities like yoga, meditation, etc. in our own area or for ourselves first. We should take grassroots-level initiative to make this initiative a real success.

Feedback on the Fit India Certification Concept Paper The Fit India Certification initiative is an excellent step towards promoting a healthy and active lifestyle across India. The certification framework should be simple, transparent, inclusive, and encourage continuous improvement rather than only evaluating performance. Suggestions: 1. Introduce multiple certification levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) so that institutions of different capacities can participate and progress gradually. 2. Include practical fitness parameters such as daily physical activity, sports participation, yoga, mental wellness, nutrition awareness, and regular health check-ups. 3. Ensure equal opportunities for rural, urban, government, and private institutions by considering available infrastructure during evaluation. 4. Develop a digital self-assessment portal with photo and video evidence, followed by random verification for transparency.

Third-Party Verification: Periodic independent audits or random verification can enhance the credibility of the certification process. Capacity Building: Provide training modules, guidance documents, and awareness sessions for implementing institutions before assessment. Incentives: Recognize high-performing institutions through awards, grants, or public recognition to encourage continuous improvement Continuous Monitoring: Encourage annual reviews and progress-based certification rather than a one-time assessment to sustain long-term fitness practices Introduce a graded certification system (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) to motivate institutions to continuously improve. Include age-specific fitness benchmarks for children, youth, adults, and senior citizens. Ensure the certification focuses on participation and improvement, not just athletic performance. Incorporate mental health and well-being activities such as yoga, meditation, and stress management. Promote inclusive
