With globalization and liberalization of Indian Economy in last two decades, numerous domestic and international companies have been drawn to investing in new modes of business/ business models targeted at the huge domestic market especially in the consumer goods & services. Direct Selling is one of these modes where goods /services are sold directly by the producer/service provider to the consumers. For this different models such as Multi Level/Network marketing, Door to Door Selling, Online Selling, Tele-shopping are being used. These practices are new and different from traditional retail through shops. In the absence of a proper regulatory framework, retail through these models leads to consumer grievances, trader’s issues, slow growth of the sector etc.

The aim of this discussion is to deliberate and evolve views of all stakeholders for providing a regulatory framework to the sector.

Normally every customers (ordinary people) were fooled when they are travelling. They need water, snacks and food while they travel. Every shop, hotel, etc near the bus stand and railway station will not provide the goods as in the MRP price. They will sell it for Rs.5-Rs.20 higher than the regular price. The customers don't have another way to go. So please take some necessary steps in this issue

Every E-portal, selling anything online, by phone or internet must have mandatory, regulatory independent nodal officer, for consumer protection with fully independent contact information, including Chat & email and toll-free No. on all matters including minimum seller's / manufacturer's warranty issue, declared online. Without going to a consumer forum., such matters should be resolved. Online Chat is very useful, as you can produce a Chat record from your PC in Consumer Court, when required.

There should be a common system and rules for weight and measure packings and selling of different products. For example packed biscuits are being sold in 72 grm. 83 grm etc etc perhaps keeping the same selling price but reducing weight from time to time.It should be mandatory that packed items, depending on product, should be in100/200/250/500 and 1000 grammes.Similarly,in readymade clothes sizes may be different but label should be clearEXAMPLE say man's shirt is REGULAR/TIGHTFIT OR SKIN FIT

To see price tag soap, oils, medicine, groceries, soft drinks is a big headache.People need to search for price, expiry date, manufacture date by keep on rotating the product. Some are in little fonts unable to read properly, some times price will be in one place, manufacturing date will be in one place, expiry date will be in another place.Bring standard, all details in bold and printed next to the name of the products with white background.Failure to follow this, allow customer to demand compensation.

EasyDNA.in is a fraud company that promised me one thing and gave me a DNA report, which was just of one page. Their promise was to send me a 11 page report from their European branch in the UK but they did not send me that. I have spent Rs. 14,795 for the entire 11 page map and ancestry report. They are a fraud company and ought to be shut down before they can cheat more consumers.

MLM & pyramid marketing schemes are different from online-, door 2 door- and tele- shopping and shouldn't be confused with them. The former is unfairly rigged to benefit early joinees and usually a scam, as such should be stopped not just regulated. While rest are legal avenues of commerce and should be encouraged for more competition & lower prices. Look at other country laws for Truth in advertising acts, clear ingredient description on packages etc. so consumers can take informed decisions.

The Telecos companies like TATA Communication and other big ventures are merely providing any service to their customers, they are more into making excuses for no/ poor service. I have a small story to share I bought a TATA MAX WiFi device few months back and since then facing some issues like connectivity, speed etc. Whenever I used to call the customer care, same excuses I used to get "There is some over loading in your area (any area) that's why you have poor speed".

We need to focus why products which can be made in India are being imported? Why electronics imports are rising by leaps and bounds and the youth of India are being deprived of jobs. After agriculture, the manufacturing sector in the SME sector alone can generate jobs for the masses. There is no programme to help the SME sector, which is starved of funds and lacks the support of a strong leadership, which has walked the talk. This is more important than regulating the direct selling industry.
