How can the proposed waterways and similar initiatives complement the various efforts to clean the Ganga and at the same time enhance tourism? Should such an initiative be replicated for other rivers as well?

Whoever depends on Ganga River for their survival, we should try to identify all their professions and try to regulate and standardize/benchmark the activities and make it process based.(Eg: Boatman). We shuld try to make process based professions, educate them regularly on cleanliness,Give them a list of Do's and Dont's and also recognize their contributions.Standardize the size of boats, the no. of people who can get in,safety aspects in place, use pollution free tags like I am for Clean Ganga.

Much has been discussed about the makeover of Varanasi and the Ganga ghats,I would like to know our govt. that the sheer divinity and the most auspicious importance of varanasi is that yogis, monks and those who seek salvation come to this holy place. But due to excessive noise pollution caused by the loudspeakers in temples and the mosques and the locally made engine fitted boats, it has become impossible to meditate and do spiritual sadhanas on the ghats of varanasi.

Please ban all the factories which are on the bank of river Ganga and throwing garbage into it.There are many leather factories in Kanpur which are throwing waste into it without any water treatment mechanism.Make it illegal to throw waste in Ganga, however there are many rules and laws, but still no government/government authorities shown any concern in past and please stop making big dams on the river Ganga. Provide for water in the river for ecological flow and dilution.

Solid waste management best practices from across the world should be practiced. Sewage treatment plants (functional ones with regular maintenance) along ganga, enforcing waste segregation at source for cities are important. Use a combinaton of carrot (incentives for compliance), stick (penalities for non compliance), along with increased education for public is key. see http://www.slideshare.net/karaikudy/waste-management-awareness-bbmpbangalore

Lot of the pollution is systemic via the religious practices and habbits (like spitting and pan chewing). This needs to be cured via the religious leaders who will understasnd the importance of recycling. Simple tools can be built to recycle the religious waste - flowers, milk, leaves and may be creatively disposed or used as fertilizers(?). People can throw flowers in one container instead of throwing them all over. pan pick can be captured in specialized waste cans. and here again ediaction, carrots and stick an enforcedment needs to happen.

Phase 2: massive investment on sewr treatment and recycling on al the major indutries alon the banks. Prioritize based on scientifc data. Awareness campaign backed up by carrot and stick of the exiting laws. or Industries and common people. If I get caught littering here in US I can be charged upto $1000 for simple littering and jailed for serious dumping. So a special police task force to educate and punish offenders. Awareness has to recah the priests and religious leaders to stop polluting.

Lets take some models from the west - develop waterbased tourism kayaks, small boats and even speed boats (environmentally safe)..let the private comanies take care of the gross clenliness using the revenues they generate. Develop water shows, spiritual and religious fire shows on the water, diining, spiritual camps, etc etc. focus on the water and not land create unique stuff like yodga on water, prayer at dawn and also some fun stuff for non religious people. This is phase 1.

Rivers are lifeline of a country and river GANGA is much more than it,for us she is our mother. So it is our moral duty to take due care of her. Setting up of water treatment plant for each area and make sure not a drop of untreated water dumped in ganga.A part of CSR should be spent specially in this matter.Towns and villages on the bank should be made clean and aesthetic for tourism.Traditional fair can be organized in those cities & villages. In between, barrages can be made to check flood.
