As part of the 'Bharat Ki Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' celebrations, a series of events are being organized by the Government of India to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence.

Through this MyGov activity, we aim to revisit history and acknowledge our local heroes whose struggles during the Freedom Movement have not received prominence in the conventional storyline. Let's raise awareness about our freedom struggle & the unsung heroes associated with it. It’s time that the contributions of fighters like Veer Gundandhur, Velu Nachiyar, Bhikaji Cama, etc. see the light of the day.

Matangini Hazra:- does a woman revolutionary in the Indian freedom struggle? On the surface, nothing at all. Yet, a reading of Indian-American scientist and author Mani Bhaumik’s book ‘Code Name God’ would show otherwise. Now, a US citizen, Bhaumik, 88, spent his childhood and college years in pre-Independence Bengal, in Tamluk, and found himself deeply influenced by three people whom he names in his writings—his grandmother, Mahatma Gandhi and a revolutionary.

Respected Sir Baji Rout was the youngest freedom fighter and matyr of Odisha. He was an active member of the Banar Sena of Prajamandal. He was shot dead by the British police on the night of 11 Octobet 1938 at Nilakanthapur Ghat, Bhuban in Dhenkanal district. He refused to ferry them across the Bramhani River. He was only twelve when he sacrificed his life for a cause. We grew up listening to his story and still get goosebumps imagining the night when a young boy faced the Britishers without fear.

Birsa Munda was a young freedom fighter and a tribal leader, whose spirit of activism in the late nineteenth century, is remembered to be a strong mark of protest against British rule in India. Born and raised in the tribal belt around Bihar and Jharkhand, Birsa Munda’s achievements are known to be even more remarkable by virtue of the fact that he came to acquire them before he was 25. In recognition of his impact on the nationals movement
