As per the recommendations made in NEP 2020, a set of standards has been developed to ensure that all students at all levels of school education are taught by passionate, motivated, highly qualified, professionally trained, and well-equipped teachers. National Professional Standard for Teachers(NPST) would help in determining the attributes of the teachers at different levels of career pathways. In addition to this, NPST focuses on preparations, practice and performance improvement of all teachers. The standards and related policies are in line with the fundamental principles given in the NEP 2020 to provide high quality education to all. NCTE was mandated by the Ministry to formulate a guiding document and platform for operationalizing NPST.

National Professional Standard for Teachers (NPST) will monitor the design of pre-service teacher education program. This could be then adopted by states and determine all aspects of teacher career management, including tenure, professional development efforts, salary increases, promotions, and other recognitions.

In this regard, a draft document on NPST has been developed by NCTE after incorporating ideas and suggestions received from experts of various domains. The draft document has been released on November 17, 2021 to invite the suggestions and feedback from all stakeholders.

To promote teachers from rural areas, the NEP 2020 also proposes a large number of merit-based scholarships to study B.Ed. programs across the country. The scholarship will include preferential employment in their local areas upon successful completion of their B.Ed. programs. Teachers hired as ‘master instructors’ for teaching local art, music, business, sports, carpentry, and other vocational crafts will be able to get training under short educational programms.

The new standards will guide the role of a teacher at different stages and the competencies required for that stage. Promoting the “continuous professional development” of teachers, opportunities such as workshops and online teacher development modules will be provided under the new policy. Every year, school teachers are expected to participate in 50 hours of CPD opportunities as per their interests.

Aiming for “high professional standards” among teachers, the draft New Education Policy has proposed the establishment of a common guiding set of National Professional Standards for Teachers, or NPST, by 2022. The proposed standards will be developed by the National Council of Technical Education. The new policy also proposes restructuring of NCTE into a Professional Standard Setting Body (PSSB) under the General Education Council (GEC).

NPST is a public statement of what constitutes teacher quality. It defines the work of teachers and makes explicit elements of high-quality, effective teaching in 21st century schools that will improve educational outcomes for students.

Sir, for raising professional standards govt must do a national planning & then start executing on that.where time to time modification needed that to be implemented through proper amendments, planning & executing. Teachers r to be trained through on line capsule workshops or some centralised clusters which r best suited to them & beneficial. Supervisory bodies r to support only admin administration, and students & gaurdian would decide performance appraisals through secret appraisal methods..
