The proposal to replace closed factories in the IIP sample is a good step because it will make the data more accurate and updated. But I request that the process should be very clear and transparent. Before replacing any factory, it should be properly checked whether it is fully closed or only temporarily shut.
The government should also make sure that the substitution does not create sudden changes in the index. Along with this, updating the item list and including MSME units will help the IIP reflect the real industrial situation better.
Overall, this idea is useful and can improve the quality of IIP data if implemented carefully.

Factories are substituted by terms like “reporting units,” “industrial units,” “sample units,” or “producing units” when compiling the Index of Industrial Production.
