So basically, this standard is about making sure products can be used by everyone — people with disabilities, older adults, even those with temporary injuries. It’s not just about the product itself, but also its packaging, instructions, and support.
The main idea is universal design, meaning a product should work for the widest range of people without needing special modifications. Any important function should be available in at least two ways — for example, not just by sight, but also by sound or touch.
When it comes to seeing and hearing things, products should have high-contrast text, avoid relying only on color, and use haptic or adjustable audio alerts. Videos or media need captions.
For controls, they should be spaced well, easy to press, and reachable whether someone is standing or sitting. Touchscreens need large buttons and should work with screen readers.
Instructions must be written clearly in plain language, with icons that have text labels. And the product needs to w

This draft is a welcome step for better accessibility under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (Sections 15 & 40). I think it should have very clear rules, be tested with people having different disabilities, and also cover digital products. Prices should be reasonable so everyone can afford them. Makers should get proper training, and there should be regular checks. Also, as per the BIS Act, 2016 (Section 10) and Consumer Protection Act, 2019 (Section 2(37)), products must meet quality standards and give information in local languages.
