Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

Lack in integration between Central, state, local government delays resolution to the problems. There should be common forum where MP, MLA, local representatives, Political folks & decision makes like IAS/IPS should meet once in 2 months to address top 5 problems in that area. This will help closing problems. People on ground will see that there are actions from government. Limited access can be given to media/ experts who wants to work for society without bringing any personal interests.

“No reservation based on religion, cast”. Reservation is still required for poor people, who do not afford to avail education. There should be new policy e.g. giving sufficient funds for individual for education and basic needs until somebody is studying. Due to political usage of reservation, government cannot make this change unless it comes as public voice. Drive is needed to seek public opinion through all the forums like social media, TV, new papers etc to create appropriate environment.
