The Department of Posts is advancing an initiative to establish a standardized, geo-coded addressing system in India, for ensuring simplified addressing solutions for citizen-centric delivery of public and private services. In this regard, the Department had collaborated with IIT Hyderabad for developing a National Addressing Grid, named as Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN). This system will act as a strong and robust pillar of Geospatial Governance, leading to enhancements in public service delivery, faster emergency response and a significant boost to logistics efficiency.

The DIGIPIN layer will act as the addressing reference system which can be used for logically locating addresses with directional properties built into it due to the logical naming pattern followed in its construction.

The DIGIPIN is proposed to be fully available in the public domain and can be easily accessed by everyone. The DIGIPIN Grid system being an addressing referencing system, can be used as the base layer for other ecosystems, including various service providers and utilities, where addressing is one of the processes in the workflow.

This system will act as a strong and robust pillar of Geospatial Governance, leading to enhancements in public service delivery, faster emergency response and a significant boost to logistics efficiency.

The advent of DIGIPIN will mark a revolutionary step in India’s journey towards digital transformation by bridging the crucial gap between physical locations and their digital representation.

The Department has released a beta version of National Addressing Grid ‘DIGIPIN’ on 19.07.2024 for public feedback, the details of which may be accessed through the India Post website: https://www.indiapost.gov.in/vas/Pages/digipin.aspx

The Department of Post in collaboration with MyGov cordially invites you to explore the beta platform and provide constructive feedback, which will help in fine tuning the specifications of the DIGIPIN.

A revolutionary initiative but there will need few changes:- 1) DIGIPIN will be longer then current PINCODE system and it will need to be alphanumeric 2) Indian cities are not designed in square grid fashion rather they are haphazardly how will you classify to last building and apartment? 3) illegal construction and illegal building are rampant in India what about them? 80% of Delhi is illegally constructed. Are you planning to exclude them? 4) you will need property registration and urban planning database and add google maps over it and further create another layer of DIGIPIN over it . 5) How will you classify slums and semi urban and rural areas? What about tribal living in Jungle? You will need to answer all these questions for this idea to materialize.

DIGIPIN is a National Addressing Grid that will serve as a robust foundation for Geospatial Governance. By incorporating a logical naming pattern, it allows for precise and directional address identification. This innovative system, The introduction of DIGIPIN marks a revolutionary advancement in India's digital journey. By bridging the gap between physical locations and their digital representation, DIGIPIN is set to transform how addresses are managed and utilized across the country.

early version of a program or application that contains most of the major features, but is not yet complete. Sometimes these versions are released only to a select group of people, or to the general public, for testing and feedback. This is the second major stage of development following the alpha version, and comes before the release candidate.

Presently Postal Pin code system has irregular area boundaries, if it is systematically streamlined with grid lines and rows by having Geo coding, we all should welcome and appreciate the initiative. Smaller the size of box more will be the accuracy. If it is linked with Internet, the IP address will have greater accuracy. Once it is properly implemented it will be easy to calculate population of a particular area, which simultaneously enhances calculation of public water demand for supply and has many many other advantages.
