India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

I started working on school safety & Disaster preparedness voluntarily in 2005 when hardly anything was happening in this area in India. Basic disaster prevention & preparedness training when imparted to school children gives them the presence of mind required during emergencies & a heightened civic sense. This will help reduce the number of casualties in case there is any disaster. If we train children we can avoid another "Kumbhkonam" incident & tomorrow's India will be more disciplined.

I think, we will have to add a subject in our basic education (1st to 10th class), which is self deference from any type of natural disaster (swimming, climbing etc.) I am saying we should become self depended in case of natural disaster because natural disaster any time

we can eliminate the loss of life by educating every people of India by conducting the awareness camp and to educate the people how to respond to the disaster situation. The educating of peoples becomes easy, if we conduct the camp and programs at the school and college level, in this stage the young peoples can learn how to respond to the situation, moral ethics, team work and culture kindly implement this idea in the school which will enhance the standard of indian education.

Dear Sir, We have awfully disaster situation almost everyday on our border. Why cann't we provide bullet proof gears from head to toe of A1 quality to protect our soldier, specially when we know they have fight every day and night. It is seriously painful to see them going.
