I must have been in the ninth grade when Hiroshima quietly came up during a long history lesson, and I went straight home afterward and asked my old grandfather, who had lived through Partition, what he honestly thought about all of it. He looked at the ceiling fan for a long, quiet time and finally said softly, "Beta, fire has always been like this.
