Ministry of Commerce and Industry
The Ministry formulates policies for the promotion of international trade, industrial development, and investment facilitation. It works to enhance exports, improve India’s global trade competitiveness, promote ease of doing business, and encourage domestic and foreign investment.
The Ministry functions through two key Departments:
Department of Commerce – Responsible for trade policy formulation, export promotion, regulation of imports and exports, Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and engagement in multilateral and bilateral trade negotiations.
Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) – Focuses on industrial policy, foreign direct investment (FDI), intellectual property rights (IPR), startup promotion, and improving the business environment in the country.
