Bhagwan Birsa Munda is the least discussed name in unsung Heroes of freedom fighter.
Bhagwan Birsa Munda) (15 November 1875 – 9 June 1900) was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, & folk hero who belonged to the Munda tribe. He spearheaded a tribal revolt movement that arose in Jharkhand in the late 19th century, during the British rule. The revolt mainly concentrated in the Munda belt of Khunti, Tamar, Sarwada & Ranchi.
Birsa Munda is known for challenging the Christian missionaries and revolting against the conversion activities along with the Munda and Oraon communities.
On March 3, 1900, Birsa Munda was arrested by the British police while he was sleeping with his tribal guerilla army at Jamkopai forest in Chakradharpur. He died in Ranchi jail on June 9, 1900 at a young age of 25. Though he lived a short span of life,Birsa Munda is known to mobilised the tribal community against the British and had also forced the Britishers to bring laws protecting the land rights of tribals.
