India's vision of becoming a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047 requires a strong, sustainable, and reliable energy sector. Hydropower plays a vital role in achieving this goal by providing clean, renewable, and affordable electricity while supporting economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Hydropower is one of the oldest and most dependable sources of renewable energy. Unlike fossil fuels, it generates electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, helping India reduce its carbon footprint and meet its climate commitments. With vast river systems and significant hydropower potential, especially in the Himalayan and North-Eastern regions, India can harness this resource to strengthen its energy security.

Apart from electricity generation, hydropower projects contribute to water management, irrigation, flood control, and drinking water supply. They also create employment opportunities, improve infrastructure, and promote socio-economic development in remote and rural areas. Pumped storage hydropower projects are becoming increasingly important as they help store excess energy generated from solar and wind sources, ensuring grid stability and uninterrupted power supply.

As India advances towards a greener economy, hydropower will serve as a crucial pillar in the country's clean energy transition. By integrating modern technology, sustainable practices, and community participation, hydropower can significantly contribute to achieving energy independence and inclusive growth.

Thus, hydropower is not merely a source of electricity; it is a catalyst for sustainable development. Its contribution to clean energy, economic progress, and environmental conservation makes it indispensable in realizing the dream of a prosperous, self-reliant, and developed India by 2047.

As part of the Independence Day Celebrations 2026, the NHPC Limited (A Govt. of India Navratna Emprise ) under Ministry of Power, in collaboration with MyGov, proudly announces an insightful and thought-provoking essay competition on the theme Role of Hydro Power in building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
