Ministry of Law and Justice
The Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, deals with legal affairs, legislative activities, and the administration of justice for the country, functioning through its constituent departments.
It works to provide legal advice to the government, draft and maintain central legislation, and oversee judicial administration, ensuring the smooth functioning of India's legal and justice delivery systems.
The Ministry comprises three departments. The Department of Legal Affairs is responsible for advice to Ministries on legal matters including interpretation of the Constitution and the laws, conveyancing, and engagement of counsel to appear on behalf of the Union of India in the High Courts and subordinate courts, besides overseeing the offices of the Attorney General and Solicitor General of India, conducting litigation on behalf of the Central Government, and administering the Indian Legal Service, the Law Commission, the Notaries Act, 1952, and the Income-tax Appellate Tribunal. The Legislative Department is concerned with the drafting of Bills, Ordinances and Regulations, scrutiny of Statutory Rules and Orders, and publication of Central Acts and their authorised Hindi translations. The Department of Justice coordinates and monitors with State Governments and High Courts for the expeditious filling up of vacant positions of judges in the District and Subordinate Courts, and the High Courts, while also handling matters relating to judicial appointments and infrastructure.
