Autonomous Bodies
Autonomous Bodies in India are institutions established by the Government to perform specialised functions in areas such as education, research, science and technology, culture, healthcare, social development and public administration. These bodies are provided with a degree of functional and administrative autonomy to enable them to undertake their mandated activities effectively, while operating within the broad policy framework and oversight of the Government.
Autonomous Bodies play an important role in supporting specialised programmes, research and development, capacity building, knowledge creation, professional services and implementation of sector-specific initiatives. Their institutional autonomy enables them to respond effectively to emerging requirements while contributing to national priorities and public welfare.
Autonomous Bodies include various research institutions, educational institutions, professional organisations, cultural institutions, development agencies and other specialised organisations functioning under different Ministries and Departments of the Government.
