Nestled on the banks of the eternal Ganga, Kanpur stands as one of North India’s major industrial centres with its own historical, religious and commercial importance. Believed to be founded by king Hindu Singh of the erstwhile state of Sachendi, Kanpur was originally known as `Kanhpur’. Historically, Jajmau on the eastern outskirts of present day Kanpur is regarded as one of the most archaic townships of Kanpur district.

Kanpur is situated on the most important national highways no. 2 & 25 and state highway, the main Delhi-Howrah railway trunk lines. It is about 126 meters above the sea level. The nearest civilian airport Amausi (Lucknow) is 65Km. away from Kanpur. Kanpur, the industrial capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh, isone of the most important metropolis of the country. According to the 2011 census, the city had a population of 27,65,348. Among the big towns of Uttar Pradesh, the growth of Kanpur has been phenomenal.

Today besides being the most industrialized region of the state, Kanpur is also an important educational centre, with institutions like Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Agricultural College, Indian Institute of Technology, GSVM Medical College, National Sugar Institute and Government Textile Institute being located here.

Kanpur Municipal Corporation is preparing the Smart City Proposal with an intent to plan and provide smart solutions to the city and welcomes the citizens of Kanpur to post their views, opinions, thoughts and plans on smart solutions for their needs related to water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, storm water drainage, waste water management, affordable housing, energy efficiency, use of renewable and solar energy, non-motorized transport, underground electric cabling, open space development, safety, healthcare, education, culture and heritage, public transport, key infrastructure such as pedestrian walkways, cycle tracks, roads, underpasses, Fly overs, services such as e-governance tools etc.

Inputs from citizens is crucial for framing a vision for Kanpur and to get selected as one among the top 20 cities in the first year, in the Smart City Challenge round.
